Should I use a desktop e-mail program or your webmail access to send/receive mail?
Summersault offers access to your e-mail via the web as a convenience for users who are traveling or for those who don't have a single desktop system they work from. However, the webmail system is not designed as a long-term solution for e-mail management, for two primary reasons:
- The user interface isn't very pleasant. SquirrelMail (the software that provides you with web access) isn't very user-friendly compared to modern tools like Mozilla Thunderbird or Google's gMail program, and doesn't offer the full benefits of those systems.
- You have limited mail storage disk space on our server. As a part of offering shared e-mail hosting, we can only provide you with a certain amount of space before you would need to start deleting/cleaning out your mail account.
So, for long-term management of e-mail, we recommend finding a solution that doesn't require you to use our webmail system as your daily-interface. The two main options here are:
- Use a desktop mail-reading program like Mozilla Thunderbird
- Have your mail forwarded to or retrieved by a gMail account, and send/receive mail through the Google interface.
If you choose option #1, you can still configure your desktop mail software to leave messages received on the server for some period of time after they're downloaded to your desktop, so that you can access them (along with any new messages) via our webmail tools. This allows users who use webmail during travel and special circumstances to continue having convenient access when away from their desktop.
For more information about transitioning from webmail to a desktop mail client, consult the software help documentation for your program.
