My hosted website has been hacked! How do I handle a security compromise?
If you believe your website hosted with Summersault has been hacked (someone has exploited a security vulnerability to compromise the site's functions or get unauthorized access to data), please let us know about this right away by submitting a technical support request.
Managing third party software and cleaning up from a security compromise is a process that's a little bit different in each case, depending on the version of the software you're running and the nature of the compromise. Unfortunately, this means that there's no simple generic set of instructions for doing this.
Our best recommendation is to find someone who is familiar with the software you're using and see if they can help you restore and secure the site. Many software vendors offer forums or other forms of community support where you can get answers and assistance. Summersault may also be available to assist you with this process; please contact us if you'd like for us to put together a quote for our services.
While we can't perform compromised site cleanups as a part of our hosting technical support, we've provided links to starting points for some popular software projects:
- Wordpress: FAQ My site was hacked
- Drupal: Fixing Compromised Security
- Joomla: My Joomla has been hacked!
- phpBB: My board has been hacked, what do I do?
Note: if Summersault identifies that a compromised site on our system may be creating vulnerabilities for our hosting resoruces or other hosting clients, we may suspend or terminate an account.
